I have been on the water for many years and operate primarily recreation vessels in the waters around Long Island Sound and the Islands. I have owned several handhelds including a predecessor to the M72. For ICOM users the buttons are familiar and remain the easiest to use. The new M72 display is superb and easy to program. They have added a little protective shield to the knob, which should protect his weak point in most radios. The loudspeaker is much louder and clearer than the prior generation. My local dealer did not have the accessory mic/speaker for the m72 but I have one on order. As good as it gets in a handheld.
Like the scrolled opening message when you turn it on. If you should put it down in the marina, another professional might just return it when he turns it on and see your vessel name scroll across the screen.

I'm very pleased with the size and battery life. I do a lot of diving and sportfishing and being waterproof is very important to me. Especially around saltwater. And ICOM has a great reputation.

Price is a little high but quality is there. A little heavy but again well built. Reception is good thru buildings. Coast Guard, air to ground good.

we are on the water almost every weekend and use the m72 as a back up radio in the tampa bay area
battery life is better than anything we have ever seen , radio is loud and clear at all times .
and range to coast guard and tow boat u.s.and
sea tow is unbelivable
these land based stations always comment that they dont believe i am using a handheld radio
and i am usually 10 nautical miles away
dont leave the dock with out the m72
you wont regret buying it once you own it .
